Biography of a Fighter Jet

The history of Southern California is inextricably linked with the history of defense aviation. Almost all of the major defense contractors can be found within a few blocks of one another in the region south of the Los Angeles International Airport: Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon. Forty years ago, the southern end of Los Angeles County was littered with airplane assembly lines, but now there are just two lines left in the county: the C-35 in Long Beach and the F/A-18 Super Hornet in El Segundo.  Here we examine the Super Hornet, and how its production has helped keep local manufacturing high and given residents economic security during times of global financial crisis.
